Krugersdorp - A Free State woman was assaulted and kicked to death a few days after she received a threatening phone call in the middle of the night.

“The anonymous person called her at about 00:30 and said if she knew what was good for her, she would f*** **f out of Kroonstad,” said Linda Desiré Henery, 26, on Monday, following the death of her mother, who was also called Linda.

Henery snr, 49, then left Kroonstad and visited her daughter in Krugersdorp.
They were watching television on Friday night when three men, two with handguns and one with a sharp object, appeared in their house in Noordheuwel.
One of the attackers stabbed her dog - a Jack Russell named Peanut - in the neck when he started barking.
“My mom begged them to take what they wanted and not to hurt us.”
The robbers made the two women lie down in a bedroom on the top floor of the house and threw a bedspread over them.
The three robbers left them alone for five seconds and in this time, Henery jnr was able to press the panic button in the bedroom.
Asked for water
When her mother asked the attackers for some water, they pulled her from the bed and threw her hard on the floor.

“I only heard her asking once, ‘Please, I had a heart bypass operation, don’t kick me like that!’”
One of the men took Henery jnr downstairs to open the safe. When she came back, she took her mother a glass of water.

“That was when I saw that her hands were tied behind her back.”
Henery snr had been assaulted so badly that she could barely drink the water. Her face was severely swollen.
A man took away the glass of water, pushed Henery jnr onto the bed and tied her up with her belts. One of the robbers then took her mother out of the room.
“She struggled and was badly injured.”
Henery jnr said it was “only a matter of a second” before the house was dead quiet.

She pressed the panic button a second time and searched the house.
“That was when I saw only her feet sticking out of the room where she was lying on her back.”
Blood
Henery jnr used scissors to cut the belt around her mother’s arm. When she saw froth at her mouth, she turned her mother on her side and wiped it off. She then saw how swollen her mother’s whole body was. “When I pressed her mouth, only blood came out.

“Why did they hurt my mother so much over a glass of water?”
Henery jnr went to look for help at an apartment building across from her house. An ADT guard came only later.
“The security guard only said he was sorry. He was busy with another case.”
The men took three cellphones, a leather jacket, takkies, jewellery and R50 in cash.

The family is deeply worried as two of Henery snr’s sisters have since also received strange calls and SMSes. A cremation service will take place on Wednesday at 11:00 at the Apostolic Faith Mission church in Noordheuwel.

Rose man tells how he fought off attacker

Graeme Hosken

August 22 2008 at 09:41AM

Recalling how his attackers threatened to murder him, South Africa’s most renowned rose cultivator has described how he was not prepared to die without a fight.

Remembering his harrowing ordeal at the hands of three gunmen, Ludwig Taschner, who owns Ludwig’s Roses, north of Pretoria, spoke on Thursday about his nightmare from his bed at Eugene Marais Hospital.

Taschner, who was shot in both arms, said he was asleep on Monday night when three men came crashing into his room.

“I woke to the noise of the men jumping against my door and then crashing into my bedroom. When I realised what was happening they were already at me, screaming.

“They screamed for money and the more I tried to tell them that the money is in the office the more they screamed,” he said. He described how they tied him up with cable ties before ransacking his bedroom searching for loot.

When the men, two of whom were armed, spotted his gun safe they immediately demanded the keys before helping themselves to a shotgun, revolver and a hunting rifle.

Leaving Taschner under the guard of their accomplice, two of the robbers left the room to search the house for more loot.

While sitting on the bed Taschner was threatened with death by his “guard”.

“He kept on demanding money, saying if I did not give him money he would shoot and kill me.”

The “guard” then left to join his accomplices, and to Taschner’s amazement, he left his weapons on the bed next to him.

With the threat of death hanging over him, Taschner seized this chance, wriggling his hands free.

Grabbing the shotgun, Taschner waited for his attackers to return. “I was not going to let them kill me. I knew if I did not do anything they might kill me,” he said.

As the men came back into his bedroom Taschner opened fire with the shotgun, narrowly missing the gunmen who returned fire, shooting him in his arm.

Bleeding profusely, Taschner managed to reload the gun with one hand before continuing to shoot at his attackers who came charging back at him.

The gunmen fled with their loot of a cellphone, laptop computer and several electrical appliances.

Taschner believes the men didn’t want to kill him.

He somehow managed to push himself before he stumbled upon his daughter, Heike, who was watching petrified as her father’s attackers escaped.

Joking, Taschner said the attack was a “nuisance” as it was forcing him to rest. “It is frustrating because I want to do so many things, but now I have no choice,” he said.

Hoax Crime Plettenberg Bay

Thursday, August 21st, 2008

Hoax Crime - Plettenberg Bay

Reported on eblockwatch POLICE in the Southern Cape have warned residents not to report hoax crimes and waste limited police resources after a teenage girl pretended to be abducted by a film crew member in Plettenberg Bay. Spokesman Ntobeko Mangqwengqwe yesterday said police were raising their concern and issuing a “stern warning” to people about the misuse of the state‘s time and money on hoax cases. The warning followed an incident 10 days ago in The Crags outside Plettenberg Bay in which a 16-year-old girl sent a hoax sms to her mother claiming she had been abducted, all the while visiting crew members working on the Crusoe television series.

The mini-series is being filmed outside Plettenberg Bay and police sources said production bosses gave their full co-operation in the incident. Australian producer Brett Popplewell yesterday said he was aware of the incident but that it happened outside of working hours. “It was an unfortunate incident and I feel sorry for those people involved in the matter.” Popplewell said the local community and crew members got along well and community support was fantastic. “This incident is a private matter between the individuals and will not affect us returning to the area for further work,” he added. Mangqwengqwe said the girl, who cannot be named as she is a minor, met crew members at a tavern in The Crags and later phoned one of them to ask if she could visit. The girl was given a lift to the house the man was staying in around 11pm on August 10. While there, she sent her mother three messages saying she had been kidnapped. When her family tried to call her, she pretended she was unable to speak and then sent an sms from the crew member‘s phone saying if they were not left alone, she would be killed. The girl‘s mother called police who rushed to investigate.

The crew members took the girl home around 5.30am the next morning, unaware of the hoax and the panic which had erupted. She collapsed in her front garden and was found by a neighbour, Mangqwengqwe said. The police were again called out and the girl was taken to a Knysna hospital and kept there overnight. “Although an abduction case was registered, the charges were withdrawn as they were unfounded. It seems the girl used alcohol and smoked from a hubbly bubbly without eating, but she was not harmed and was not abducted,” Mangqwengqwe said.

‘No, my love’… then 7 shots
04/08/2008 07:47  - (SA)
Virginia Keppler, Beeld

Pretoria - An elderly man from Doornpoort in Pretoria was shot several times and his wife was assaulted early on Saturday morning, before they were robbed.
Emilio Couto, 67, collapsed and died in a pool of blood where the robbers shot him.
His wife, Maria, 59, tried to push the bedroom door closed while the robbers fired shots through the door.
She said her husband’s last words were: “No, my love.”

The robbers broke the burglar bars on the kitchen window and then unlocked the kitchen door.
Emilio woke up first. Maria said: “I heard him say, ‘No, my love,’ and I woke up because I thought he was having a nightmare.”

When she realised what was happening, she tried to push the bedroom door closed.
Then, it was quiet
“At that stage, I didn’t realise that my husband wasn’t in the room with me anymore. Then I heard four shots as they were shooting at me through the door.”

Emilio was fighting the attackers outside the door. Maria said: “It was God’s hand that one of the shots did not hit me.”
Maria said she heard shots again and then it was quiet. The robbers then kicked the door open and hit her on the head and shoulder with a firearm.
“I screamed and they shouted: ‘Keep quiet, keep quiet.’ They wanted to know where our safe, guns and cellphones were. I said we didn’t have a safe or guns.”

The robbers took the couple’s four cellphones, some jewellery and a laptop. They dropped the plasma-screen television and it broke.
After the robbers had fled, Maria pressed the panic button. She said the security company, Computer Alarm, did not respond.

I should’ve been dead today

Sunday, August 3rd, 2008

I should’ve been dead today
01/08/2008 09:21 - (SA)

Hilda Fourie, Beeld

Johannesburg - A window frame may have saved the life of John Tingle of Wingate Park in eastern Pretoria, during a robbery at his house.
“I should’ve been dead today,” said Tingle, 48, after the robbery. “The weapon was pointed at me. If it had not been for the window frame, it would’ve hit me in the head.”

Tingle, the son of former Zimbabwean Formula One racing driver Sam Tingle, was watching television in the living room with his son, Sam, 16, on Wednesday night at about 20:45 when they heard the dogs barking.

He went to settle them down. When Tingle came back to the living room, Sam heard something suspicious outside. “The next moment there was a bang in the office (next to the living room),” said Tingle.

When he walked into the office, his garden fork, which had been thrown through the window, came crashing to the floor in front of him.

“I grabbed the garden fork and tried to stop them (the robbers) from getting into the house through the broken window. I had to use my garden fork as a weapon against a man with a firearm.”

One of the two robbers pointed a gun at him at the window.

Tingle and the robber were about a metre-and-a-half apart. A shot went off. The bullet hit the window frame and ricocheted back.

Robbers grabbed Tingle’s laptop

Tingle walked backwards and still tried to keep them out of the house with the garden fork.

Meanwhile Sam and his mother Sheelagh, 50, who woke up from the noise, screamed so loudly that the neighbours heard them.

The robbers grabbed Tingle’s laptop and fled.

“I knew if they came into the house, we were dead,” said Tingle. “They came to kill us.”

Sheelagh said if the robbers had come at 03:00 in the morning, the family would have been too late to keep them out of the house.

“It’s terrible to say you are lucky to be alive after something like this, but we are lucky not to be dead,” she said.

Tingle praised the fast reaction by the police and the Ubuntu security company.

They were on the scene moments after Sheelagh pressed the panic button.

Lyttelton police station commander Director André Wiese said charges of attempted murder and robbery were being investigated.

Robbers attack partygoers in Pretoria, Faerie Glen

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

Robbers attack partygoers
29/07/2008 08:09 - (SA)

Virginia Keppler, Beeld

Pretoria - A car guard was shot and an academic was viciously assaulted when at least six armed men attacked a house in Faerie Glen in eastern Pretoria during a birthday party over the weekend.
An attacker pointed a gun at Wayne Truter, 32, and pulled the trigger, but the shot didn’t go off.

“I was very lucky,” Truter said on Monday from his bed in Pretoria East Hospital.

He and about 15 other guests were celebrating his fiancée Minandi Mostert’s 30th birthday when they were attacked.

Truter, who is a lecturer in the Department of Plant Production and Soil Science at the University of Pretoria (UP), was assaulted during the attack.

‘It was like a cowboy movie’

Truter said he and five others were dancing when an armed attacker walked in and aimed the gun at them.

“When I saw it, I immediately raised my hands. It was like a cowboy movie.”

Truter ran from the garage to the house to get his panic button.

The other attackers forced Mostert and the other guests to lie down on the veranda.

“I ran out again and wanted to flee from the bottom of the garden to the neighbours to get help, but three of the robbers grabbed me and dragged me to a dark place at the back of the property.

“They assaulted me, the kicked me in the stomach, where I had recently had a hernia operation, and hit me on my left leg with a brick or a pipe.

“I fell and then one of them tried to shoot me.”

When the shot did not go off, the attackers jumped over the wall and fled.

He then realised that he was seriously injured and that the car guard had been shot in the arm.

Truter and the guard were both admitted to Pretoria East Hospital and the guard was later transferred to Pretoria Academic Hospital.

Guard in stable condition

Truter said they had hired the guard to look after the guests’ vehicles for the evening.

The guard, whose name was not made known, is in a stable condition.

Mostert said on Monday that she would not have another party at home.

“It’s too dangerous. Next year we’re going to the Spur.”

Police spokesperson Colette Weilbach said the police were investigating charges of attempted murder, armed robbery and assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm.

Son killed, father critical after attack Doornpoort

Son killed, father critical after attack
Graeme Hosken

July 30 2008 at 08:10AM

A Pretoria man was shot in the head execution-style while trying to defend his parents from a gang of heavily armed robbers.
Twenty-six-year-old Andre Bam of Doornpoort was shot at point-blank range when he came running from his bedroom during the early hours of Tuesday morning after he was woken up by his parents’ hysterical pleas for mercy.

The murder comes after Bam’s mother and father, Veronica and Christiaan, recently moved to Pretoria from their Free State farm, apparently because of the crime situation there and to be closer to their children.

Neighbours on Tuesday told the Pretoria News that the couple, who are in their 50s, had moved to Pretoria because of safety concerns for themselves and their children.

The attack comes as police sources revealed that there had been an increase in the number of violent house robberies in the Doornpoort area during the past month.

The gunmen, who were armed with an assortment of handguns, broke into the family’s Sand Vygie Street home through a window at about 2am and made their way to the main bedroom where Bam’s parents were asleep.

It is believed that Veronica Bam was woken up and began screaming when she spotted the men standing over them.

Her husband, who woke up because of the screams, is believed to have pleaded with the gunmen to leave the family alone and take what they wanted.

He was shot four times and critically injured.

Information given to the Pretoria News indicates that the gunman who killed Andre, was waiting next to his bedroom door and shot him as he ran out to help his critically injured father and his mother.

It is not known how Veronica managed to escape after being shot by the gunmen, who fled empty handed moments after shooting her husband and son.

Neighbour Tania de Wet said she was asleep when a hysterical Veronica telephoned them pleading for help.

She said what had happened was horrible.

“Crime is out of control here. There does not seem to be an end to the attacks. They just carry on and on,” she said.

A paramedic, who confirmed that Andre had died at the scene, said Christiaan was in a critical condition in Netcare Akasia Hospital.

Hospital spokesperson Ben Rood said Bam had undergone surgery and was in the intensive care unit.

“Although he is still in a critical condition, he is stable,” he said.

Sinoville police station spokesperson Mirna Von Benecke said no arrests had been made and that nothing had been taken during the attack.

Anyone with information on the identity of the attackers can contact Sinoville police station detective branch at 012 543 0800.
