Hijackings increased – up by 55% – Is this acceptable?

Security risk assessment Hijackings: Hijackings increased by 55%. They say that acceptance is the key to happiness. Will it make us happier if we accept the fact that hijackings have become part of everyday life? I sincerely doubt that.

Hijackings increased by 55% in the last four years

According to this article, hijackings in South Africa have gone up by a massive 55% over the past four years.  That means that approximately 40 vehicles are hijacked each day. How do we accept that? Do we lock ourselves up in our homes in fear of being hijacked? That’s no way to live.

Did you know that a majority of the hijackings occur in driveways of homes? People become complacent, failing to notice surroundings, distracted by phones or children, making them vulnerable to hijacking in seconds.

The goal of the hijacker is to use the stolen vehicle specifically as a method of transport to facilitate other crimes such as arms deals, drug runs, burglaries, or armed robberies. Many robbers do this and use the victim’s own vehicle to transport the stolen goods when they arrive home during or after a burglary. Individuals typically do not intend to resell these vehicles but rather abandon, dump, or dismantle them for spare parts later.

Another consideration is to follow your gut instinct, although it cannot be fully explained, at least not in logical terms. Often, we get a feeling of foreboding when something is amiss.
