Thirty Seconds to Entry

independent security risk assessment Security risk Assessment – A criminal needs only 30 seconds to get in.
Imagine this:Thirty seconds. That’s all it took. There was no need for Hollywood-style lock-picking. There is no advanced technology involved. All it took was a criminal, a sliding gate motor, and half a minute. In less time than it takes to reheat your coffee, they were inside someone’s property. Uninvited. Unseen.

We recently conducted an independent security risk assessment for a logistics depot in Nelspruit, identifying risks that standard assessments often overlook. This approach allows practical measures to be recommended, enhancing the overall safety and security of the property.

Think it couldn’t happen to you? Think again.

Sliding gates—we trust them. They’re convenient, they look secure, and they hum with the promise of protection. But here’s the truth: convenience isn’t security. Gates don’t stop criminals; they slow them down. And sometimes, not even that.
The real question isn’t whether your gate can open and close smoothly. It’s whether it can stand between you and a determined intruder when it matters most. Thirty seconds. What if it were your driveway? Your home? Your family?
Now ask yourself: Can you afford to be reactive? Or is it time to think ahead—before the break-in happens? This is where prevention starts. And it begins with seeing your security not from your perspective, but from theirs.

30 Seconds: That’s All It Takes

What can you do in just 30 seconds? Maybe you’d pour a glass of water, hold your breath in a staring contest, or count to 30 as your teenager tests your patience. Besides Usain Bolt speeding down a track, most of us wouldn’t think much could happen in such a short time. But for a criminal? Thirty seconds is plenty.
I’m going to share a shocking revelation with you, even though I’ve conducted numerous security assessments. It took criminals only 30 seconds to break through a motorized sliding gate and access someone’s home. Yes, those very gates many of us believe are our first line of defense. The ones we install for convenience and peace of mind. We trust these gates to keep intruders out, but this story proves otherwise.

Forget about the old-fashioned lockpicking you see in movies.

These guys used their skills to disable the motor of a sliding gate in record time. Thirty seconds flat, and they were inside. Now, I’ll admit, this particular break-in ended relatively well. No one was hurt, and the criminals fled empty-handed, leaving only the damage to the gate behind. But is that really the point?
Here’s where my mind always goes: What if? What if someone had been in the driveway, stepping out of their car? What if the criminals had entered the house? What if a child had been playing in the yard when they stormed in? Or what if the homeowners arrived at the exact moment of the break-in?
When a situation like this doesn’t escalate, it’s easy to feel relieved, but the reality is sobering. If they broke in once, what’s stopping them from doing it again—or worse?

The problem with most security systems is that they’re reactive.

They don’t stop criminals before they act—they alert you once the damage is already done. A sliding gate, for instance, might give you some convenience, but on its own, it’s not a proactive measure. And that’s where we’re all getting it wrong.
True security should focus on prevention. Criminals should never even get close to your gate without being detected. That’s the kind of proactive security we all need, and it’s where an Independent Security Risk Assessment comes in.

What Is a Risk Assessment?

An independent security risk assessment isn’t about selling you cameras, gates, or alarms. It’s about studying your property from a criminal’s point of view. Where are the weaknesses? What opportunities are you unknowingly leaving open for criminals? A good assessment will answer those tough “what if” questions before they become real-life problems.
Think of risk as the presence of opportunity. If there’s an opportunity, a criminal will exploit it. Security, on the other hand, is the absence of that risk. With a proper assessment, you can close off those opportunities and take control before anything happens.

Fighting Crime Proactively

At Alwinco, we specialize in exactly this. Our goal is to help you fight crime by making your property as unappealing as possible to criminals. With each assessment we conduct, we work to eliminate risks, not just respond to them after the fact. Because let’s face it—crime is too late. Once it happens, you can’t undo the trauma, the financial loss, or the fear it leaves behind.
Whether you’re protecting your home, your business, or both, don’t wait for something to happen before taking action. A proactive approach can distinguish between a close call and a life-changing event.

So, the next time you see your gate slide open, ask yourself this:

Is it really secure, or could it be defeated in 30 seconds? If you’re unsure, it’s time to act. One risk assessment could be the key to ensuring it never becomes a target.
After all, security isn’t about reacting to what’s already happened—it’s about preventing it from ever happening at all.
