What You Need to Know to Stay Safe this festive season

Introduction

The holiday season should be a time of celebration, not fear. Yet, this time of year brings a noticeable spike in hijackings, burglaries, scams, and other crimes. Criminals rely on distraction, routine, and poorly coordinated security systems to take advantage of unsuspecting victims.

Over the holiday season, we conducted an independent security risk assessment for a residential property in George. This approach proved invaluable in identifying security risks that would likely have gone unnoticed by a typical service provider assessment.

If you would like to learn more about our assessments or have specific topics you would like us to address, please email your suggestions to andre@alwinco.co.za. We will create and publish articles tailored to your interests on our website.

The holiday season is meant to be joyful, not stressful.

As the holiday season approaches, road safety and personal security become even more critical. Hijackers are known to use several tactics to catch drivers off-guard, especially during this busy time of year. Key strategies include ambushes at red lights or stop signs, the “box-in” method where multiple vehicles trap the target car, staged accidents, and fake police stops. Hijackers also employ the “gate block trick,” preventing automatic gates from opening so they can seize the vehicle as the driver exits to investigate. Drivers should stay vigilant by avoiding distractions, changing their driving routes, and opting for busier, well-lit roads to minimize the risk of being targeted.
To outsmart hijackers,

Practicing defensive driving tactics and remaining observant at intersections, parking lots, and while approaching one’s home is essential. Ensuring enough space to maneuver around other vehicles can provide a quick exit if danger arises, even if that means cautiously running a red light. Keeping doors locked, windows up, and valuables out of sight further reduces vulnerability, while parking in safe, well-lit areas adds an extra layer of security. Additionally, drivers should be cautious about stopping for suspicious incidents, as these may be staged traps. In cases of police stops in unmarked vehicles, it’s within one’s rights to proceed to a police station if feeling uncertain.

The festive period also sees a rise in other crimes, such as burglary, online fraud, and domestic violence.

Criminals are alert to signs of wealth, like empty TV or gadget boxes left by the curb, which advertise valuable items in the home. It’s crucial to conceal these items and be cautious with online shopping, watching out for fake deals and phishing scams that could lead to identity theft. The roads bring their own hazards, with spikes sometimes used to force drivers to stop and an increase in drunk driving incidents. Drivers should avoid nighttime travel if possible and ensure they have alternative transportation when consuming alcohol.

Home security is also a priority.

Before traveling, homeowners should review their security systems and ensure cameras, alarms, and monitoring capabilities are in working order. Backup batteries for alarms can be vital during power outages, and trusted neighbors or caretakers should have temporary access codes if needed. We discourage sharing travel plans on social media, as it can unintentionally alert criminals that your home is empty.

Security is only effective when it operates under a comprehensive plan, not just the latest technology.

Like a jet without a skilled pilot, advanced equipment alone cannot secure a property. A thorough Security Risk Assessment provides a detailed view of potential vulnerabilities and helps create a cohesive, purposeful security strategy. This proactive approach can help protect families, homes, and businesses, ensuring that safety measures truly function as intended. By anticipating threats and preparing adequately, one can enjoy the holiday season with peace of mind.
