# Independent security risk assessment

At Alwinco, we specialize in delivering independent security risk assessments that provide practical, tailored solutions for every property we assess. Recently, we completed an assessment for a commercial property in Polokwane, where we identified key security risks and developed recommendations that were both effective and straightforward to implement.

If you would like to learn more about our assessments or have specific topics you ‘d like us to cover, please email your suggestions to andre@alwinco.co.za. We will create and share articles that address your interests directly on our website.

André Mundell began his security career at 19 with the South African Police Service, rising to head detective and commander before being retrenched for asking the wrong questions. Turning his passion for risk assessment into a profession, he launched a blog in 2003 to explore why crime persisted despite security advancements. By 2006, he had founded Alwinco, a company dedicated to proactive security. The name reflects its mission: ensuring individuals and businesses maintain control over their security. # independent security risk assessment

Mundell identified a major flaw in South Africa’s security approach: the blind reliance on physical security measures without understanding actual risks. Alwinco addresses the problem by conducting thorough security risk assessments, stepping into the mindset of criminals to uncover vulnerabilities. Unlike most security firms, Alwinco is independent and does not sell security products, ensuring unbiased recommendations. With over 600 risk assessments completed, the company has worked with residential estates, schools, malls, corporate parks, and high-value locations, always maintaining strict confidentiality.

The Key to a Risk Assessment is Independence

An independent security risk assessment goes beyond checking for cameras and fences; it is a thorough investigation of all factors influencing security. Alwinco assesses policies, threats, and security frameworks to identify risks before criminals can exploit them. One key truth stands out: an informed business is a secure business. Security is not just about having the latest technology but about understanding and actively managing risks. Alwinco’s mission is to uncover weaknesses and educate clients, ensuring they take control of their security to prevent crime before it happens.

Many so-called “assessments”

are merely sales pitches disguised as expert reports. Security providers often hire assessors who align recommendations with their product offerings, prioritizing profits over genuine risk identification. This is why independence is crucial. Alwinco operates differently; we do not sell equipment, install systems, or work for security providers. Its only commitment is to delivering honest, unbiased assessments so clients can make informed decisions.

The dangers of third-party assessments are often overlooked.

When security providers control the process, they may share sensitive security details without informing the client and influence the final report to serve external interests. Similarly, when both the client and the security provider pay the assessor, conflicts of interest shape recommendations to benefit the provider instead of addressing the client’s actual security needs.. Security companies frequently approach Alwinco to conduct assessments on their behalf, instructing them to bid low to help secure contracts. However, Alwinco refuses to compromise its integrity. True security assessments must be independent, honest, and free from external influence; anything less creates vulnerabilities that put people at risk.

Alwinco Business Model

For over 20 years, Alwinco has conducted security risk assessments the right way: independently. Unlike traditional security providers, Alwinco does not sell security equipment, provide armed response, or install alarms. Instead, the focus is on assessing risks objectively, identifying vulnerabilities, and understanding security from a criminal’s perspective. True security begins with independence, ensuring that assessments are not influenced by sales targets or external agendas. Many misunderstand Alwinco’s role, assuming it operates as a security service provider.

In reality

It is South Africa’s leading independent risk assessment consultancy. Operating virtually long before remote work became mainstream, Alwinco adapted seamlessly during COVID-19, further increasing its efficiency. The company’s expertise spans multiple industries, including corporate offices, warehouses, hospitals, high-value clients, and airports. Instead of maintaining an in-house team of specialists, Alwinco brings in experts as needed, ensuring that each assessment is handled by the best minds in the field.

Confidentiality is key.

Only Andre Mundell interacts with clients. An incident reinforced this policy when someone recognized an undercover expert in public, jeopardizing an entire operation. Since then, Alwinco has tightened its protocols to protect the integrity of its work. What truly sets Alwinco apart is its ability to assess security the way a criminal would, rather than through the limited perspective of security companies or managers. This unique approach ensures that risks are not just identified but fully understood, allowing clients to take meaningful steps toward true security.

Different types of assessments

Alwinco conducts security risk assessments through the eyes of criminals, recognizing that they are constantly evolving and adapting to bypass security measures. The approach to risk assessment today is vastly different from five years ago, influenced by emerging threats, new technologies, and artificial intelligence. Alwinco is the only company in South Africa that has studied AI’s impact on security, evidence collection, and legal proceedings. Unlike traditional security companies, Alwinco does not sell security services, install equipment, or provide security guards. Its sole focus is on assessing risks, presenting multiple solutions, and guiding clients on how to address vulnerabilities effectively. A common misconception is that PSIRA registration makes Alwinco a security company, but this simply allows compliance with industry regulations. True independence sets Alwinco apart, making it South Africa’s only truly independent security consultancy.

In security, knowledge is not just power; it is survival.

Security experts conduct risk assessments, also known as vulnerability, threat, or security inspections, through in-depth investigative processes to uncover hidden risks that superficial reviews might miss. These assessments maintain independence and enhance physical security for individuals and properties. We tailor each assessment to specific security needs, ensuring that clients receive objective and actionable insights.
