Inner crime / Insider crime

At Alwinco,

we conduct independent security risk assessments that expose threats often overlooked, including insider crime. Recently, we assessed an industrial facility in Middelburg, where internal vulnerabilities posed a greater risk than external threats. If you would like to learn more about our assessments or have specific topics you would like us to cover, please email your suggestions to andre@alwinco.co.za. We will create and publish articles that address your interests directly on our website.

Introduction

Most companies spend nearly all their security budget guarding against threats from the outside, while the real danger often lies within. Insider crime, also known as inner crime, is responsible for the collapse of countless organizations across South Africa. Ignoring this internal threat not only drains resources but also leaves businesses wide open to failure.

At Alwinco, we specialize in uncovering these hidden risks through Independent Security Risk Assessments. If you want to safeguard your business from within, contact us today at andre@alwinco.co.za or visit www.alwinco.co.za to schedule your assessment. The cost of doing nothing may be far greater than you think.

95% of South Africa’s security budget is locked in fighting external threats, while the danger from within goes largely ignored! Insider crime, often called inner crime, is the silent force that can tear apart businesses, corporations, estates, state-owned enterprises, and hotels. Simply put, inner crime is the primary factor contributing to the collapse of numerous organizations. Some companies end up spending hundreds of thousands, even millions, to patch up the damage. Others fail to receive a second chance and ultimately close their doors permanently. I’ve seen it happen time and again. I could say, “I warned you,” but that’s not my style when the damage is already done.

When I discuss inner crime,

People often respond with disbelief. “Our employees are trustworthy and loyal,” they insist, brushing aside a harsh reality. Yet, by ignoring these internal threats, companies end up wasting money on temporary fixes. Take the Post Office, for example, an organization that chose to overlook the danger until it was too late. It’s like treating the symptoms of a cold without ever addressing the cause. You might soothe a runny nose or a headache for a while, but unless you cure the underlying virus, the cold will keep coming back, eventually evolving into something far more severe. Similarly, insider crime acts like a cancer inside a business; it slowly wears down everything until it’s almost impossible to save.

Sure, replacing stolen goods or repairing damaged property might seem like a solution.

But if you ignore the root cause, the internal threat, you’re setting off a chain reaction that can cripple your organization. Consider this: while billions are reserved for security, 95% of that money is used solely against outer crime. Meanwhile, little is invested in fighting inner threats. The irony is striking; external criminals often succeed with some help from someone on the inside.

Fighting insider crime is a completely different ballgame.

You can’t use the same strategies designed to fend off outsiders. These internal offenders already have unrestricted access to your premises, confidential files, and even your security protocols. They know where the cameras are, which ones are operational, and even where your security personnel stand guard. So, how do you stop someone you trusted from betraying that trust? Too often, top executives, directors, CEOs, and board members ignore the voices warning them about internal fraud, corruption, and the theft of sensitive information. We only hear about these breaches after a thorough audit or when a company suffers catastrophic losses, leading to closures or massive retrenchments.

I often ask myself:

How do you help someone who refuses to listen? How do you guide decision-makers with facts when they prefer denial over action?

And ultimately, who is held accountable for the loss when those warnings go unheard? If you’re skeptical, I invite you to join me on a walkthrough of a Security Risk Assessment. Look closely at companies buckling under the weight of inner crime. You’ll see that these organizations either never conducted an independent assessment or entirely ignored the expert advice given. In my experience, ignoring insider threats can lead to disastrous outcomes, and I would be delighted to be proven incorrect! In the high-stakes world of physical security in South Africa, it’s time we stop treating the symptoms and start tackling the root cause. Let’s protect our businesses from the dangers lurking within!
